Did you know that there are no government requirements that air freshener products get tested for safety?  This is according to Gina Solomon  Senior Scientist at National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), who goes on to state “…forget about figuring out whether there’s anything nasty in the bottle by reading the label. Secondly, there’s not much testing info out there from independent sources either…”   The standard air fresheners contained benzene, formaldehyde, irritants, allergens … and a chemical called DEP” better known as phthalates, a potential hormone disruptor.  Read more about her findings by clicking on her name.

Try these healthier alternatives:
Open the windows–simple but effective. Good ventilation is the first line of defense in removing odors.
For stinky garbage disposals pop a few used lemon or lime rinds into the disposal and run it for a minute. Shut off the disposal and fish out the rinds and your sink will now smell of fresh citrus.
If you’re a fan of fresh flowers on the table, or fresh herbs in your cooking, you know all too well that they wither and dry out far too quickly. But rather than tossing that faded bouquet or bundle of herbs,  transform the petals and fronds into DIY potpourri.
Save those used coffee grinds – It’s a great way to remove unpleasant odors from the fridge.  To transform the wet grounds into a homemade deodorizer, spread the grounds out on a cookie sheet and pop them in a very low oven until they are dry.  You can also rub wet grounds on your hands to remove smells that soap can’t seem to cope with, like fresh garlic.
Take out the trash often and clean any spaces that might have mold or dirt lurking.
Make your own air freshener by using a few drops of essential oils like lavender, lemon, and tea tree…and boost your mood while your at it
Houseplants can be your friend and clean the air too!  For plants with a nice smell of their own, try Geraniums, Gardenias and Jasmine.

My husband and I love coffee so there are always plenty of grounds. Good to have a use for them now!
